It is easy to forget that even though the "Young Lions" shaped jazz history during the 1980s and '90s, mature artists were making magnificent music, thoroughly informed by tradition but not in the least enslaved by it. Canadian-English trumpet and flügelhorn player Kenny Wheeler's The Widow in the Window is a good example of a veteran player whose lyrical artistry has been too often underappreciated. Performed by the core of his Large Ensemble--pianist John Taylor and guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Peter Erskine--compositions like the title cut and "Ma Belle Helene" typify Wheeler's ability to write beautiful, romantic music that never descends into mere prettiness. Wheeler's horns and Abercrombie's guitar appear to float above the rhythm section's swinging sensitivity, and yet there is a muscularity that prevents the ensemble from drifting off into the ether. Recorded after Wheeler's celebrated orchestral recording and an 11-date tour, the recording reflects the result of increased exposure that five giant talents had to each other on the road. Here, they meld into one brilliant voice. (Note to Abercrombie fans: this CD contains some of the guitarist's finest recorded straight-ahead playing.) ~ Michael Ross.

Some small info:

Gare du Nord are Dutch/Belgian lounge-duo that is formed by Doc (Ferdy Lancee) and Inca (Barend Fransen). Ferdy Lancee and the Belgian saxofonist Barend Fransen started their cooperation in 2001, as a result of a soundtrack for one-off lounge in Belgium. Music comes in the hands of the large independent Play It Again Sam in Brussels what leads Excellounge (2001) and child or Cool to the albums (2002). Some tracks can be found on the soundtrack of the series Six Feet Under and the horrorfilm Ghost Rider (2006). In 2003, Gare du Nord continued with nine men strong link touring the Netherlands and Russia. In their own Cell4-Studio in the Netherlands the third album Club Gare du Nord (2005) is incorporated.

Guitarist, composer and producer, Marc Antoine was born in Paris (France). His parents bought him his first guitar when he was 11 years old. Marc has had a guitar in his hands ever since. At age 13, his father saw such rapid progress that he sent him to the conservatory where he would study classical music. By then his mentors were Andres Segovia and John Williams. At 17 he'd already won many prizes and started showing an interest in a variety of music genres including jazz, rock, afro, pop, and more. In 1988 he moved to London (England) where in joined Basia's band and worked with The Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra (Soul to Soul), Pato Benton and General Public. He was also part of the London Acid Jazz scene.

His world tour travelling lead him to spend time in Tokyo where he became an acclaimed session player. As a true citizen of the world, Marc kept moving, this time to Los Angeles(USA) at the beginning of the 90's. He stayed there for 13 years playing for music royalty such as Sting, Celine Dion, Rod Stewart, Cher, Selena, Queen Latifah, George Benson, and others. In 1995, R&R elected him Best New Artist of The Year, which was followed by a Gavin Award in 1998. He has also received numerous nominations for jazz awards in the US and Canada, also won a dance latin instrumental Grammy. Marc was honoured when George Benson mentioned him as one of his favorite guitarists. Marc currently resides in Madrid (Spain) where he writes and produces in his studio when he's not giving concerts.

His parents bought him his first guitar when he was 11 years old. Marc has had a guitar in his hands ever since. At age 13, his father saw such rapid progress that he sent him to the conservatory where he would study classical music. By then his mentors were Andres Segovia and John Williams. At 17 he'd already won many prizes and started showing an interest in a variety of music genres including jazz, rock, afro, pop, and more. In 1988 he moved to London (England) where in joined Basia's band and worked with The Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra (Soul to Soul), Pato Benton and General Public. He was also part of the London Acid Jazz scene. His world tour travelling lead him to spend time in Tokyo where he became an acclaimed session player. As a true citizen of the world, Marc kept moving, this time to Los Angeles(USA) at the beginning of the 90's. He stayed there for 13 years playing for music royalty such as Sting, Celine Dion, Rod Stewart, Cher, Selena, Queen Latifah, George Benson, and others. In 1995, R&R elected him Best New Artist of The Year, which was followed by a Gavin Award in 1998. He has also received numerous nominations for jazz awards in the US and Canada, also won a dance latin instrumental Grammy. Marc was honoured when George Benson mentioned him as one of his favorite guitarists. Marc currently resides in Madrid (Spain) where he writes and produces in his studio when he's not giving concerts.
